Would you like to be a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist?

You may be wondering how I got here. Somedays I wonder too...

But seriously, perhaps you have a career goal to be a healer or helper of people, or perhaps you are a therapist already - psychologist, social worker, addictions counsellor, pastoral counsellor, etc - and would like to become a registered marriage and family therapist (RMFT).

By the way, a word on nomenclature. MFT stands for Marriage and Family Therapist and is the term typically used by our parent organization, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). RMFT stands for Registered Marriage and Family Therapist and is the term adopted by the Ontario Association for Marriage and Family Therapy to designate members who are certified as clinical members of AAMFT. I will use the Ontario term here.

RMFT's have a Master's or Doctoral degree, 11 postgraduate courses in specific areas - marriage and family studies, marriage and family therapy, human development, professional ethics, and research - have completed a 1 year practicum of 300 hours of counselling practice (this is a prerequisite - there's more), and have completed at least two further years of supervised clinical practice, that is, a further 1000 hours of counselling, plus 200 hours of concurrent clinical supervision. Supervision of this practice is based on raw data (audiotape, videotape, direct observation) of the therapist at work.

The University of Guelph is a good place to go for the courses, and I help to teach some of these.

If you would like supervision for either your 300 hour practicum or your 1000 hour post-graduate therapy practice, you can come see me.

I am actively in training for certification as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor (I am a supervisor candidate) and will provide supervision to you under the mentoring of an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. You may count your time with me as with an Approved Supervisor, with a hidden bonus: you have the benefit of two supervisors for the price of less than one.

Both individual (dyadic) and group supervision are available.

You must apply to me and be accepted before you can receive supervision.

Download the application or telephone or email me for more information.
